Dental Implants, What you need to know before you decide.

Dental implants are artificial tooth root replacements that in many ways are better than natural teeth, but if done improperly can lead to major problems and major costs to correct those problems.

Choose a doctor with Bona Fide Credentials that signify the doctor has been tested on his/her skills relating to dental implant treatment. Dental surgical specialists have a Board Certification, a credential that signifies their skill in surgery, dental implant treatment has a surgical component, but there is more. Surgical specialists do not perform the second phase of dental implant treatment or the fabrication of artificial teeth supported by dental implants. Prosthodontic specialists have a Board Certification, a certificate that signifies their skill in fabricating artificial teeth supported by implants, but not for surgery. There are some specialists with Board Certifications in surgery and prosthetic dentistry, some have a medical degree in addition to other Board Certifications.

General dentists, and dental specialists can become Board Certified for Implant Dentistry through the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry, which certifies a doctor’s knowledge and competence in all phases of implant dentistry, even if he/she does not provide all the parts of the treatment. A Bona Fide credential is a certification from an independent testing organization that requires a doctor to present evidence of competence in one or both phases of the treatment that requires testing. Why is that important?

A Board Certified doctor showing competence in Implant Dentistry can possibly help avoid improper treatment and unwanted complications. Board Certification in one or more aspects of the treatment process, surgical and/or prosthetic phases, is desirable, but not a guarantee of results. The most important consideration for any patient is the doctor’s overall experience and knowledge in all aspects of the dental implant treatment process. This includes proper diagnosis and treatment planning, surgical placement, prosthetic restoration of the missing teeth, and regular follow up and preventive care based upon that experience. The American Dental Association for reasons of their own has chosen not to recognized implant dentistry as a dental specialty, nevertheless, it is very specialized treatment with great potential for excellent and other outcomes. The American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry was established and chartered by the American Academy of Implant Dentistry in 1969 and serves the function of a Bona Fide certifying organization, similar to other recognized dental specialty certifying boards. Nevertheless, Implant Dentistry is not a dental specialty recognized by the American Dental Association.

What Is CEREC?

CEREC is an acronym that stands for “Chairside Economic Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic” It is a technology that was developed in Germany 27 years ago by SIRONA Corporation in conjunction with Dr. Werner Mormann who was the inventor. CEREC was essentially a CAD CAM (Computer Aided Design – Computer Assisted Milling) process that allows dentists to make replacement teeth in the office for patients in one visit, but that is only one of the advantages.

Not only is the process of making a crown/veneer/Bridge finished in one visit, but the final result has a fit and tolerance so much better than what could be previously produced in a dental laboratory, and the fit of the restoration created has much to do with how long it will last into the future.

Another advantage is that the patient only has to be numbed for one appointment. Before we had CEREC the patient had to wear a temporary tooth for 2 weeks while the permanent crown was being made in the dental laboratory. With modern CEREC technology everything can be done in one visit.

All ceramic materials used in the process look more like natural teeth because there is no metal involved and the latest ceramic materials are just as strong as the old fashioned metal type crowns/bridges.

Suffice it to say, CEREC is the best modern dentistry has to offer you today.

Call Today for a no cost evaluation to find out how CEREC can help you!

Who can you trust to help you with dental implant treatment ?

The American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry is the only dental implant competence testing and certifying organization that has been recognized by the Federal Courts as being “bona fide.”  The ABOI rigorously tests the competence of the doctors that present for certification, in terms of their knowledge and ability to practice implant dentistry. A doctor achieving Diplomat status with the ABOI is going to be best able to provide you with state of the art dental implant treatment.

Dr. Mayberry is a diplomat of the ABOI, and has surgically placed and restored dental implants since 1983, treating thousands of dental implant patients over the last 28 years, from single one tooth to full mouth dental implant restorations. He is licensed to provide IV sedation for his patients, the most effective, predictable, and comfortable sedation technique for outpatient surgery and other dental treatments. He has in office CEREC CAD-CAM, technology for one visit permanent crowns and computerized tomography scanning technology that allows state of the art dental implant treatment planning options.

“Are you a candidate for dental implant treatment?” Part II

Second, dental implants are stronger than natural teeth and once in function strengthen jawbone rather than weaken it like conventional bridgework, full and partial dentures.

Third, Dental implants, which are nothing more than artificial tooth root replacements can be used to replace a single or multiple teeth or act as a supporting foundation to stabilize dentures or other patient removable teeth.

“Are you a candidate for dental implant treatment?” Part I

Dental implants the most long lasting permanent dental restoration being provided today. Replacing teeth with dental implants has distinct advantages over all other tooth replacement procedures.

First, dental implants don’t decay, which makes them the longest lasting dental restoration possible. One of the most discouraging facts patients discover after undergoing extensive dental treatment is associated with new tooth decay in difficult to clean areas, which can result in having to redo or lose those previously restored teeth. Teeth that have had root canal treatment are the ones that fail more often than any other teeth, especially back teeth. Many patients are much better off to remove such teeth and replace them with dental implants than to waste money on root canal treatment and the associated crowns that are prone to failure, since many infected teeth become saturated with bacteria that can never be completely cleaned, even with the best root canal treatment.
